「考点精讲」last一词

last可以做形容词、副词、动词等。今天我们来了解一下。

（1）last做形容词，意为“最后的；末尾的；上一个的；最近的”。例如：

He is always the last one to leave school.

他总是最后一个离开学校。

Thanks for your last letter.

感谢你的上一封来信。

The last news is that he has left for China.

最后的消息是他已经去中国了。

（2）last做副词，意为“最后；上一次”。例如：

Who came in last？

谁是最后进来的？

When did you last see her？

你上次见她是什么时候？

（3）last做动词, 意为“持续；进行；维持使用”。例如：

The rain has lasted two days.

雨已经持续下了两天了。

The cloth won't last long.

这种布用不了很长时间。

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop（突然） quiz.

大学生活过了一个多月，教授忽然让我们进行一场考试。

I was a conscientious（勤勉的） student and had breezed（轻松通过） through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

我是一个勤勉的学生，所以轻松完成了前面的题目，但最后一题就不那么容易了，题目是：“打扫学校的那位女士叫什么名字？”

Surely this was some kind of joke.

这肯定是某种玩笑。

I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?

我看到过那位女士好几次了。她很高，有一头黑发，大概50多岁。但我怎么知道她叫什么名字？

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

我没答最后一题就交卷了。

Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

下课前，一位学生询问最后一题是否也算在考试成绩里。

"Absolutely," said the professor.

“当然了，” 教授答道。

"In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.
